There’s a Lot Happening in East Cleveland.
In the City of East Cleveland, just east of Cleveland’s thriving University Circle area, lies one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods by the foreclosure crisis. In 2014, Cuyahoga Land Bank leadership observed a slew of properties in a concentrated area dotting the Cuyahoga County tax foreclosure list. Through strategic land assembly, and targeted acquisition and demolition efforts, the Cuyahoga Land Bank now has 280 land parcels in its inventory in a 33-acre stretch along the Euclid Corridor.
In collaboration with the City of East Cleveland, the Land Bank is facilitating a strategic redevelopment plan to breathe new life into the city’s core. The Land Bank commissioned a study and master plan for redevelopment in 2021. The resulting five-year strategic redevelopment plan aims to create a unique and inclusive neighborhood that showcases the potential of the East Cleveland residential market and create a vibrant mixed-use commercial corridor on Euclid Avenue, leveraging its proximity to the University Circle employment hub.
To date, the Cuyahoga Land Bank has leveraged more than $2 million in acquisition and demolition monies, nearly $500,000 in field service maintenance of the properties, and more than $200,000 in planning studies, dramatically raising the potential for commercial and residential redevelopment.
The key components of the project include infrastructure work, building new middle-income owner-occupied housing options, a home repair grant program on select streets within the redevelopment area, and development of two signature buildings at the Euclid Avenue gateway into East Cleveland.
